I can't really put my finger to it...
I was looking for songs about the cross that could be sung at our church. Besides a few that I know, I could not think of many more.
I looked through a praise binder and it disgusted me with how many "I" songs and songs about how God is so good to us without mentioning the cross. It's AMAZING.
it seems like the message being sent through all these songs is that God is great because of the blessings he gives us...those feel-good thoughts. it's not necessarily wrong, but it's not complete either. I can easily see how this could correlate to wishy-washy Christian lives. We like to praise God for the now...if we're having a good day...if something is going well..it's some kind of blessing that He's given us. If things suck, God is not good...b/c my life is not going well. It's soo "ME" centered.
Why don't we remember the cross and how it pertains to us EVERY DAY!
You know, the old Testament is filled with examples of Israel forgetting God's deliverance and how he rescued them from their oppressors. They DID NOT REMEMBER. That's why they feared so much...that's why they fell away so much...that's why they were punished so much! Look at even Simba in the Lion King! He did not remember who he was, until his dad in the form of clouds reminded him who he was. Then he turned back and did what he was supposed to do..
We should remember the cross every day. That alone should be more than enough reason to give thanks and have joy everyday. More importantly, in my own opinion with a praise-flavored argument..there should be lots more songs written about it and SOLELY about it.
We must remember the cross.
